I read this when it first came out and rated it 5 stars. Three years later, I remembered nothing. So I picked it up again, it truly was like reading it for the first time. I was really enjoying, and it was around the 150-200 mark where I was like, this is good but it feels like a 4 star book. But I spoke too early. From that point onwards, I spent every word either screaming, swooning, or itching with anxiety for what was going to happen. SUCH. A. GOOD. BOOK. When I finished it, I wanted to re read it again.

I'm not sure why I thought it would be the best Idea ever to read another witch/witch-hunter book right after Crimson Moth, but for some reason I did. I read this years ago and have been meaning to reread and finish the trilogy,  and since Crimson Moth will have me chasing its high for quite some time I thought this could be a place to start. It's not nearly as good as Crimson Moth, but it's a fun time. I still  very much enjoy Lou as a main character, and Coco is fantastic, and Ansel must be protected at all cost he's my new sweet baby. I went with the audiobook this time around thinking it was a marvelous idea... Sadly I have mixed feelings about the audio...
I LOVE Saskia Maarleveld with all my heart and she's a fantastic narrator as always. I wish she narrated the whole book. Normally I like multiple narrators for FMC/MMC pov but the male narrator for this was almost unbearable. His cadence was so weird with odd and sudden pauses in the middle of every sentence,  and the way he did actual people's voices was terrible. Everyone had a growly gremlin voice. His normal narrating voice could have been fine but he spoke every single sentence like it was the breathless climax of an action scene whether it was or wasn't. Even just scenery descriptions were made to sound urgent and crazed. It was really bad. For book 2 I will probably have to get a physical copy to read Reid's parts and then just listen to the parts Saskia does. I probably wouldn't have made it if I hadn't read the book before.

I feel like I’m missing something. That ending was just so... underwhelming. Big reveal of the aunt but I have no idea who that is. Also the only developed character in this entire book is Reid. Lou’s is entire personality is based off of banter. The plot is so so so weak. There’s not enough world-building and not enough purpose behind the romance. This had so much potential to be a good book but so Many things make it bad. Why couldn’t the author think of a more hypocritical religion than Christianity?? It’s a fantasy book; why not be creative? Also I get that Lou is supposed to be this super sneaky blasphemous thief, but I only see that in her banter with Reid. And if this book is a part of a series, I think the author made a mistake in completing the entire romance arc in one book.
