This book was very unique. The voice the author brings to Caroline is true and good in a way that it felt like it was written by Ruth—the woman at the heart of the real life events. This transition was aided by Peter Rock’s evocation of strong sense memories like those from childhood.

I should note that I don’t remember hearing of this story at the time but after reading the book I looked up the Oregonian articles from 2004. I was struck by the parts of the book that followed those events exactly as well as those that differed. Naturally in real life the two characters are more ambiguous whereas Rock exerted some artistic freedom in writing them as more pure and naive.

Recommended by my nephew. Because this book was inspired by true events I was not expecting that ending.
