If you’ve seen the movies, you’ll love the books! The plot is mainly the same, but the first and last 100 pages of the book (comprehensive of all three books) are absolutely unbearable in slowness. Almost got put off the series because of the first 100 pages. But once Aragorn shows up the pace picks up, so if you want to skip the world building because you just wanna relive the movies, skip til that part in Bree. Truly irrelevant to all plot, and just fun if you love the characters. I skipped most of the songs and poems because I also couldn’t be bothered with those.

Still the best The Lord of the Rings adaptation ever done - bar none.

Listened to over 26 weeks of half hourly episodes on BBC Radio 4 way back in 1981, then bought on cassette as soon as they became available. (Also recorded off the radio when broadcast, but absolutely terrible quality.)

Found the CD version in 2024 and listened to again, twice, back-to-back. it is SO bloody good. For the battle scenes - watch the Peter Jackson films; for the true depth of the book listen to this (or actually read it).

It's worth noting that the Tom Bombadil, Old Forest and Barrow Wight section is entirely missing from the adaptation which probably pleases and displeases people in equal measure. I'd rather it had been included, as it explains better where Merry gets his sword to help Eowyn kill the Witch King, but I always understood that the length of the story dictated certain things had to be cut.

The 1968 The Hobbit adaptation is less good but still well worth listening to.

Altered my brain chemistry.

I really enjoyed this series, I have to read two towers for high school and then decided to go ahead and read the rest. To be honest there were a lot of slow point for me (explaining a tree and the land around it for 4 pages) but the battles were exciting and the writer really wanted you to feel as though you were watching everything take place. I really like how the books jumped around between multiple stories for the different character groups. I also loved all the main characters and their interaction throughout the book. Overall, defiantly a classic series I think all should read.

I love this book! Once I started the book it was like being in another world! I read this for the first time a few years ago with my mom and reading it with another was great because you got another persons look on it. I recommend reading this series with someone just because its fun, but reading by yourself is great too! :D
