I am getting to really like Anne Tyler's writing. She is brilliant at describing all the little nuances and quirks that make up her characters and making the characters endearing, complex and interesting. She has a better eye/head for people than your average writer. There was something lovely about the ending of this, but I was still disappointed with the way it wrapped up (I was hoping for something different.)
Ladder of Years makes me fantasize about changing my phone number and telling no one. :)

Meh, I didn't like this one all that much. It's very easy to read but I really couldn't stand Delia, I was just so annoyed with her.
What did I just read? Heavily invested in all the characters and then the ending leaves you asking what the point was. Grrr
Very readable - but crazy story (especially the ending). This story encouraged me to follow the real-life story of a woman who "disappeared" from a Beth Moore conference in Texarkana, LA. I suspected that she had walked away from her family, much as the main character in Ladder of Years. Sure enough, about 5 months later, she surfaced in New York.

I love Anne Tyler and this remains one of my favorites. The writing is a full five stars; the ending that is not what I would have chosen is why I give it four, but that doesn't make it any less great of a work. Seeing so much of myself in a book is of course both amazing and painful, but well worth it.
