I was expecting more as this is Cassandra Clare’s debut into adult fantasy. However, it felt like I was reading another YA fantasy novel. The concept is interesting and I may continue on with the series as this felt more like an introduction into the world with most of the plot happening in the last 2 chapters.

Did well with the general world building and main character development. But the larger motivations, overall plot, and suspense of “what’s going on”…
Didn’t seem to have enough pull to make me interested in reading book 2. It doesn’t feel like the overall story happening in this world is that interesting even though the world itself and the main characters were well done.

I really, REALLY wanted to love this book. I love the shadowhunter world so much. But this fell short for me. I got to the end and have no desire to pick up book 2.
None of the characters had any real appeal, the plot was low to roll out. So much so that I'm not sure if much of anything truly happened if you strip it down to bare bones. In fact, if one did, you'd have a very short paragraph.

I wanted to give it a higher rating but I was a bit peeved about a couple of things. The pace was a bit slow for me, the character names and places were overly complicated in pronunciation and really took away from the flow of the book, and I didn't find myself invested in any one of the characters and where their story went because it felt like if I thought it was going one way, the author went in another direction. The love interest aspect of the story was all over the place but in all fairness would I call this a romantasy? No. Maybe I went in thinking that and I was disappointed because of it. The next book has potential, that's for sure, but unless the book is on sale for 1.99$ like this one was on kindle, then it might be a pass for me.

Finito!
I have been in this world so long, I don’t know how I will move on from it. This was a really good fantasy. I cannot wait for the next book.
