Stunningly gorgeous, devastatingly sad. Really exposed the challenges of the immigration system, and the desperation of people seeking safety and opportunity.

This book did take me a while to get into, and I struggled about with the vocabulary at some times
But the story was very interesting and kinda sad and once I had gotten into the book and figured out who and what everything was I really enjoyed it

This is a heartwrenching but not overly graphic novel about 4 Indian people trying to survive and thrive in the UK. 1 is an illegal immigrant, 1 is a citizen, and the other 2 are "legal" immigrants. Each one is bound to England in the hopes of making it big to help provide for their poor families in India. Sadly, they soon learn that exploitation and danger exist just as much in the UK as back home, and the reality of immigrant life is not what they hoped.
This is a contemporary novel written by an Indian man and I think it does an excellent job of exposing the realities of some Indian immigrants without bashing the reader over the head.

Beautifully handles big picture issue of coming from India to England while also including perfect small details. Excellent writing. The different characters operate to illustrate various experiences of living in England in very personal and human ways.
This is a detailed, almost relentlessly grim story of three young men who migrate from India to the UK in the search for opportunities, and a UK-born woman who helps one with a marriage visa. We move back and forth in time, and perspective as we learn about their lives in India, the various illegal ways they came to the UK, and their experiences trying to find work. It did put me in mind of Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance, I suppose because of the continual striving in vain, but I found it far less depressing in the end, which isn't saying a lot. As well as the truly awful work and life situations, there is a lot of cultural detail, and untranslated Punjabi which I did enjoy. It is a moving story about Sikh culture and religion, what people can endure for family and duty, the experience of migration, and the need for hope.
