Michael J. Sullivan who hurt you 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I loved this so much but it hurt meeee

It's not really a sophomore jinx if it's the third book, right? Also, they've been steadily declining in stars from the 4 star first book. While Sullivan is more coherent than some meandering authors (Martin...) who start a series and then have no clue how to end it, he does seem to have written far too much to support his idea.

This book is almost completely derivative of the first two, with very little new. The big save, Suri and another sacrifice, is such a dull re-use that it is really nothing at all. The elf world still seems cardboard and trite, with only the humans holding a glimmer of interest and with characters moving forward in their lives. Gifford and Roan's stories are the best told.

Stigmatizing strong women
Heroic sacrifice and last stands
Bending the arc of humanity

This series is always interesting since it's prequel and yet what we know about how things turn out in Riyria Revlations is so skewed by history. I like looking at these events as I read and try to match them up with what happens thousands of years later. There's still a lot to be revealed, even 3 books in. There's still mysteries and pieces that don't quite fit and that's cool at this point. I look forward to not only continuing on in the series, but the re-read when the story is complete.

4/5*

I enjoyed this book far more this time than I did the first time I read it. I think that has something to do with reading all of the book consecutively rather than waiting a year in between each book. Remembering all of the characters and what happened in earlier books is usually tough for me.

2018: 3/5*

The good:
- TGR’s narration.
- Suri (unsure about the spelling, audible), Wraith, and Malcom.
- Fantastic descriptions of landscape and architecture.
- Builds on and connects with Riyria lore.

The bad:
- Little to no recap of the previous books. Few opportunities to familiarize yourself with characters outside of a core few.
- The characters ruminate and speculate — All. The. Time. They are incredibly hard on themselves and agonize over the past, the present, and the future.
- The dwarves — who played a prominent role in Age of Swords — are all but gone. They are only mentioned a handful of times.
- The ending. If you have read it, you know what I’m talking about. The choices felt too convenient.
- I had to check how much time was left a few times. I was shocked at the end when I realized I only had an hour left. The characters hardly grew and I didn’t care about much that was happening.

Overall: this is a tough call. I have enjoyed the last two books MJS published (The Disappearance of Winter’s Daughter & Age of War) a lot less than earlier books in both series. While this my least favorite addition to the world of Elan, I will absolutely continue to read anything MJS writes.

This series is SO good! Love the narrator as well, he really just makes the experience of using an audiobook that much more appealing. This series is definitely one that will be added to my shelves, digitally and physically!
