With this third volume of the series, “The Legends of the First Empire” has a new place among my all-time favorite fantasy series. It’s that good.
This novel’s title would have you believe it is about war. And it is…but not necessarily in a way you might think. We’ve known for a long time that war is coming but there really aren’t all that many “battle sequences” in the plot. It’s much more about the characters than the swords and shields and sweat. This is epic fantasy at its best. I can’t say much more about the plot without spoilers but I could go on and on about how great this was to read. I really didn’t want it to be over. It pulls at the heart strings many times but it also rewards you with many a goose-bump moment.
I’ve certainly enjoyed the first two books of the series but this one takes it all to a whole new level. It is clear now how all the characters and events in those first two books have been building towards this one and it’s an awesome payoff. The emotional investment that I have in these characters has really come full circle. The author’s note at the beginning of the book describes how he originally planned this to be a trilogy and, indeed, this book does have a feeling of being the climactic book in a set of three. But there are more books to come so it will be interesting to see how those expand the story.
Not enough stars to rate this properly...

Having just finished reading this I am still recovering from the emotional onslaught that Mr. Sullivan keeps bringing to me with this series. Each book just keeps getting better and better and this is by far the best so far. Incredible battle scenes, emotional tug of war - do I laugh? Do I cry? Do I curl up into a little ball and wait for the next book? YES! I haven't felt this emotionally attached to a group of characters since LOTR and I NEED to know what's gonna happen next.
I will say this book started out, at least for me, a little slower than the first two books, and it took me a bit longer than those as well to get into. But boy when I got into, I got INTO it. The continuation of seeing characters you love grow and meet their true potential is so fantastic and rewarding, and the moments that rip your heart out don’t back down at all. When I started reading the book I thought it would be a 3.5-4/5, but by the end it was definitely a full five. This series just keeps getting better!
Dang, every addition to this series just gets better and better. I love all of these characters so much, and this book ripped my heart out at the end. We keep expanding this world and learning more about the political machinations at work and it's all so fascinating. The plot was slower in the beginning, and then really picked up as the war started. I felt the desperation and the helplessness that so many of these characters felt. All of the character development that we got was so well formulated by Sullivan. I truly felt that all of the character arc were superb, and their emotions and decisions they made during these tough times all felt very realistic and devastating. I would recommend this series to all fantasy fans. Sullivan gets how to make you care about a character.
