A very important and groundbreaking study on the subject of gender theory and queer masculinities.
Halbertsam makes many interesting points tracking the history of (predominantly) lesbian masculinity from Ann Lister until the 1990s. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on the butch in cinema. I have reached for individual chapters through my academic career and am sure I will continue to refer back to this again.

Not as dated as I thought it would be…groundbreaking stuff. Cover art goes pretty fucking hard

This was a major source in the Trans project I did when studying at The Oregon Extension. Really great, meaty (pun intended) information on the topic.

Read this if you have any interest in butch lesbians... so good

dense at times, but a very insightful, respectful and nuanced look into female masculinities. Learnt so much about the history of butch women and drag kings. For a book from the 90s it's so inter sting that so many of the same discussions are being had in the queer community today - butch/ftm overlap, "good" representation, stone butch identity and SA etc.

Just wish it had explored more into female masculinities outside of the lesbian identity
