i didn't think i’d like this one but i ended up really enjoying it. i smashed through the whole thing in just two sittings. it was tough to read about the animal abuse especially since i’m such a big animal lover but overall it was a really good read.

An interesting book about a dog and his feeling that the wild is calling to him. There are definitely some more graphic scenes (a lot of what we would think of as animal abuse) and some outdated terminology we would not use today, but it was a nice book about the pull between animal's loyalty to man and their instinctual desire for the wild.
Yeah I did cry over the dogs!!! They were doing their best and they got beaten and killed !!!! BUCK!!!! It felt less like he was answering a call of the wild and more like he had been so completely abandoned and turned away from civilization. Like humans rejected his civil nature to the degree that even under the best of circumstances he already a wild animal pretending to be civil for love. Which like who of us aren’t.
Unfortunately very dated in its portrayal of indigenous people :/ even through the eyes of a dog it was uncomfortable.
