Wow I really liked this for a few very basic reasons. 1. It was free to read, it didn't feel like the author was trying to con 1.99 out of me to gain some insight into the world she is trying to build. 2. It had depth, I mean this was a meaty novella. The kind I rarely come across. It would have actually been worth paying for. 3. I was very dismissive of this book before I read the novella and now I am DYING to read it. Thats the whole point right?? This novella accomplished what it set out to do, it really really really added to the main story and I can respect that. =)

Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

This didn't grip me nearly as much as the main book, but I partly blame the amount of time since I read the main book, and also reading mood. It was nice to get a little  more flavor of the larger world and see what happened to Kai while he was away, so well worth the read!

A very enjoyable, short prequel! I usually end up regretting reading these, but this one I loved! I really liked getting to see Kai and his progression as a character.

My only complaint is it felt like it ended too soon; I would have loved to see more of a resolution, though we can fill it in pretty well from what we learn in For Darkness Shows the Stars.

This left me so confused about older Kai's thoughts and viewpoint... Instead of clarity of Kai's character, he seems unnecessarily bitter as a character in the main book, compared to this prequel. Least we get to see the beginnings of how the exploring gang hot together.

For Darkness Shows the Stars was one of my top 2012 reads, and this novella tells how Kai came into contact with the Innovations. I liked it ;)

This novella takes place after Kai ran away from the North state, leaving Elliot and the life he always knew behind. It tells a little of what happened with him in the 4 years he's been away and how he came to meet the Innovations and become a part of the Cloud Fleet. It was nice to follow Kai's POV for a while, I was always wondering what he was thinking during For Darkness Shows the Stars and what he was feeling, and I got at least a brief glimpse here. I still think he was a bit unreasonable with Elliot, but I can understand his desire to go away and be free. He went through a lot after the escape the North State.

The only thing I felt was a little bit unresolved for me was his two friends, Cleopatra and his little brother, Napoleon, the ones he was teaching how to read and write. Are they supposed to be Andromeda and her brother in the past? That's how they met and the siblings ended up in the Cloud Fleet? Because I thought the story of these two siblings in this novella resembled the siblings in the main novel, especially when Kai mentions that Cleopatra told him about her original state and how bad it was there and we know for a fact that Andromeda and her brother escaped their state very young because of all the violence and abuse they suffered. I like to think that it was indeed them in this novel and that's why Andromeda is so protective of Kai - because he was the one to actually save them, by helping them and after through the Innovations, getting them on Cloud Fleet.

Nice novella to add to this world Diana Peterfruend created!

This was a decent prequel to For Darkness Shows the Stars. As always, I loved Diana Peterfreund's writing. It was absolutely gorgeous and added to my enjoyment of the novella. I also liked that we got to see how Kai got to be a rich sailor.
The only thing I didn't like about this novella was that Kai kept degrading Elliot for not coming with him.

Overall, this was a good novella. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

I wish I had read this novella before [b:For Darkness Shows the Stars|8306761|For Darkness Shows the Stars (For Darkness Shows the Stars, #1)|Diana Peterfreund|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1338529086l/8306761._SY75_.jpg|13155802], because so many of my issues with world building from Elliot's point of view are dealt with beautifully from Kai's. Part of the limitation was trying to understand the world from the North Estate, but Kai has left the estate and is out in the larger world, headed for and eventually living in the post enclave.

Kai is a bit of an enigma in FDStS, but within these 100 digital pages he comes to life, the boy who would choose the life we see him in with the Star Fleet.

Seeing this was a prequel to For Darkness Shows the Stars, I decided to read it as a sample to help me make my mind up if I wanted to read the book. And boy do I want to.

Peterfreund writes an interesting short story that is part dystopian with flecks of fairy tale bits. Makes me wonder what her other novels are like and I guess I'm going to have to find out.
