Slay the house boots down!!

This is the perfect Karin Slaughter book for when you do not want to start a series. This book made me feel a lot of what I felt when reading Pretty Girls. I am talking about when the writing creates an anxiety so thick that the reader's chest hurts.  This was not as gruesome/gory as Pretty Girls, but had some great "oh shit" moments.

Was not super into all the talk about the pandemic. This novel takes place in early 2021, so there is a lot of talk about vaccines, variants, masks, etc.

nobody does it like karin slaughter, literally.

as are most of her books (i’ve only read pretty girls) this felt like being repeatedly punched. i don’t think it was as brutal as PG, but it was definitely just as merciless— but then again, stories revolving around rape are never not. it should only be read by someone who can tolerate the awful, cruel scenes that are vividly written, consuming most of the book’s almost 500 pages. there is no page where the awfulness stops, so you should definitely take breaks if you plan to pick this up.

i didn’t necessarily like leigh. characters shouldn’t always have be to likable, and readers don’t have to agree with their decisions, but i had a hard time sympathizing with her as she continuously made terrible choices. for (mostly) valid reasons, yes, but i didn’t root for her as much as i did callie.

i can’t say much about callie without spoiling, but her story is was one of the most heartbreaking stories i’ve ever read. just incredibly, incredibly painful.

i could’ve given this a 5 star rating because the first 400 pages are just excellent. with all of its brutal, and gory madness, it was still fantastic. but i wasn’t a fan of how some things played out in the end, even though the last scene was great.

karin slaughter never disappoints with shocking twists, delivering them almost casually, up until the very last page. there are several twists that are predictable, but the ones that weren’t were so good.

an exhausting, consuming read. i’m not picking up another one of her thrillers until a good amount of time, though.
