nothing like a vampire hunter and his two vampire lovers

I love a vampire book, and I love vampires as all types of romantic fuckwits. Remy may not be a vampire, but he's so starved for any and all affection, praise, and touch that he's willing to engage all these terrible people. He also cannot see the forest through the trees, which is why he's so good at killing monsters but so terrible at plans and strategy. In little ways, this means Xiaodan and Zidan can seduce him, and in big ways, Remy's dad will outplay him.
Zombies are my least favorite horror villains. But the pacing continued along, so we weren't stuck too long with the zombies or too much in long, drawn-out battle scenes. Chupeco moves through fight scenes only to stop if we're learning something new, and they understand that an enemy with a brain is a more interesting battle than a brainless one.
The twists all seemed obvious, which didn't take away my enjoyment. Or at least, there's no way you're constantly mentioning mom's death without mom actually being alive, aka a vampire. Of course, she's the Night Empress.
Where the book leaves Xiaodan, I hope the sequel gives her another layer of characterization and helps her figure out her place in their group dynamic.
I want a whole novella where Elke gets her seduction of Alegra.
I'm certainly looking forward to reading the sequel.
