Ghost story set mostly at a house that was part of the Underground Railroad. This followed several main protagonists, two of which were mixed race couples and tied in to their experiences at our near this house that was haunted by a girl killed during her attempted escape to freedom. A little confusing at times, but that may have been due to my stops and starts.

This was a solid book - but a bit much going on for my taste. I felt like I never got to know any one character because there were constantly more being introduced. Not just living humans, but ghosts. Lots of ghosts! Too many for me, since they all had individual stories and plots. That being said, I thought it was pretty insightful on race relations and white guilt and has some pretty powerful irony that was well-written and nicely pulled off. If you like spooky ghost stories but don’t like gore/being too scared, this is a good book for you. I think it definitely had some powerful moments and left an impact on me, I just felt it needed more distilling, as all the characters and side plots seemed to distract from the actual meat of the story.
