“What did you expect?”
Looking at where his life carried him, from his own choices he made. It’s bleak and beautiful and real. But to see he still had so much passion and love. This book had me fucked up.

Concise writing, beautiful and efficient. The story of a man suffering, with all the classic themes, though with a rare white male protagonist who does not lash out at the world or assume that it is his right to assert his will upon it.

Very short chapters and efficient pacing which helped motivate my finishing it. Interesting meditation on American poverty and the effects of the world wars. The wife stuff was better done than I anticipated, though I am still ambivalent about it. Beautiful ending.
