Super interesting! Gawande's immensely readable, and it's so interesting to read the inside view of medicine. Will probably try to persuade some medical student friend to read it and ask them what they think.

This book not only had some interesting insights into the life of a surgeon, he also presents some interesting essays on the physiology of pain and nausea, the explosive growth of bariatric surgery, rise and fall in SIDS deaths, and other topics. I found it very interesting.
Well written & thought provoking in terms of U.S. medicine
Decent, relatable pop-science. More of a mile-wide, inch-deep look at surgery and medical science that grounds the nitty-gritty in real stories. A pleasant read, but not one that showed me anything too new.
Some interesting stories and a few interesting nubs of insight, but they're so underdeveloped and/or trite that it's ultimately a pretty big disappointment. At least compared to his NYer stuff.
I enjoyed this peek into the medical world. However, the middle section felt out of place. I’m guessing this is because the stories are not grounded in actual patients that Gawande has seen, but greater concepts that he is exploring. The book would have been stronger with the personal stories and anecdotes that mark the first and third sections.
Wish I could give this 3.5 stars. Life of a surgeon mixed in with anecdotes from his career. I thought certain parts were interesting and I think he's a good writer, but for some reason I just thought I would like it more than I did. I wish I could put my finger on it.
I was humming a lot quite well into this book until the part where he starts talking about a car crash victim. Since Brandon was killed less than 2 years ago, vehicle crash stuff is still way too raw for me & I had to skip the rest of that chapter.
Besides that, I gleaned a lot from this book & enjoyed it. If/when the next time I have to deal with a serious medical issue, I will have a better understanding of what it is to practice medicine
