The lives of Sara Foster and Emilie Dubois intertwine in this book and are connected around the restaurant Yerba Buena.

Sara, runs away from home at 16 and heads to Los Angeles and tries to hide her family’s dark secrets. Emilie is struggling to find herself and a sense of purpose while her family falls apart.

Their choices and the families keep them apart even though their strong connection to each other keeps attracting them back to each other.

I think this is one of those rare times that I would have enjoyed the physical book rather than the audiobook. Even still, this was a great queer read. Definitely one of the better ones I’ve read thus far this year. Might give it another shot to up the .5 rating.

(I received an ARC for free via NetGalley in return for an honest review.)

4-an intertwining of stories that is not formulaic or stilted. This whole book and all of the words in it flow like water. Also, some sad sad shit happens.

If there were 1/2 stars, I’d give this book 2.5/5.

The thing about Yerba Buena is that none of the thoughts or themes or characters felt complete. There were a lot of great ideas that weren’t ever fully explored, and therefore, this book felt disjointed.

Two other things to note…
- The chapters are really long… like 50 pages+ long.
- I thought there were a lot of side characters in this book and it was kind of tough to keep track of who was who. Also, their side-stories didn’t add anything.
