Short stories seem to be the new promotional thing in the Young Adult/Middle Grade world and thus far, I haven't been all that astounded by what this trend has produced. Allies, however, proved to be highly enjoyable and I think, a worthy addition to the series as a whole. A semi-prequel to Insignia (which I loved), it follows Wyatt from before she enters the Pentagonal Spire through shortly after Tom arrives/they begin to interact.

Over the course of this journey, one of the elements that really resonated with me was the handling of Wyatt's intellectual difference. While never explicitly identified as having autism or aspergers, things were certainly written that way, especially in the terms of the differences between Wyatt's understanding of the world before and after implantation. I thought this whole arc was really well done, both in terms of respecting Wyatt as she was before hand and in recognizing that "fixing" her brain was not entirely positive. Beyond this, I really enjoyed getting to see a somewhat different perspective on the early parts of Insignia and especially getting more background on Wyatt's friendship with Yuri.

As you can see, this was very much a character driven piece--if you liked Insignia and like Wyatt, chances are very good you'll like it too. It's short and surprisingly emotional and very fun. Also, it's just a $1.99 on Amazon. READ IT.

It has the humor and style of Insignia and gives some insight into the character of Wyatt. I really enjoyed reading this short novella!

A cute short story about Wyatt. Enjoyed it, I just wish I wasn't done with the trilogy and it was a series so I could continue reading about Tom's world!

To start off, this is an addition to the Insignia trilogy, so if you haven't read that, you should before diving into this. Now. It is SO good!
But anyway, Allies is all I could ask for in a companion collection of short stories. It catered to all my fangirlish desires and was so delightful that as soon as I finished the forty pages or so, I turned to page one and started over. And over. And over. The feels never died down, but rather got stronger after each reread. And that is hard to do.
Normally, I find it difficult to be as loyal and supportive of a side character's point of view, but Kincaid fleshed hers out so well, made them all so lovable and dynamic, that I frankly wouldn't mind reading from any of their perspectives. Allies focuses on Wyatt, a shy, socially awkward, but very intelligent girl. I could relate to her in many aspects, which made the experience all the more special. Through Allies, we got to better understand the beginnings of her journey to becoming a trainee at the Pentagonal Spire, her experiences before she makes strong friendships.
I was considering giving 4.5 stars for this novella because I would have like more of her story and a deeper exploration of Wyatt's character, but on the other hand, it leaves so much more freedom for the fans to use their imagination. What really made me give this a shining rating was the fact that Allies was thought provoking, making me think more about Wyatt as a character. It also made me feel all these emotions worthy of a five star book. So worth the money.

Series Review

Allies is a short 50-ish page book that should be read between Insignia and Vortex. It's not required if you're not into dropping a couple bucks for the story, but I found that it gave some helpful context to certain events as well as give some enduring insight to Wyatt--who is one of the best characters in the story.

Me encantó cómo comenzó su amistad con Yuri, their meeting was so bootiful.

EDIT 07/07/14 -- Now review in english!

I really liked seeing more of Wyatt, about her life before meeting Tom, and even before she joined the Intrasolar Forces. With this, I can now admit that I am like Wyatt in certain things. And, if I were in her place, I'd take the same decisions and would make the same choices. I loved how her friendship with Yuri started, their meeting was indeed beautiful and amazing, it couldn't have been any more perfect. I still hate Vik, sorry. I just... I don't understand how can you like the things he does. Wyatt was already feeling down before meeting the boys, and then Vik comes around and makes it worse, makes her feel even worse.
Now, about Heather. I like her and I hate her. I like her because she's true to her personality, she stands by her principles and her character, and she doesn't change. (Fine, she was "nicer" with Tom some times, but it was fake, so...) She always gets what she wants, no matter the cost. With all this, what I want to say is that, Heather is a freaking manipulative biatch, and she knows that and she still doesn't care, she doesn't change for anyone or anything. (well, okay, she changes /just like the Tom subject/ but only when it's good for her//when she can get something from it) Still, I hate her. She's a bad person. (Or well, an unlikable person, in my opinion) But I still like her very much, as an enemy.
