While the story kept me on the edge of my seat, a few of the more mundane scenes felt overly-dwelled on. This is possibly because I’m not a huge fan of ‘hard stop sentences’ (I.e: She was disoriented by the scene. She left the kitchen… and so on), but it did tend to take me out of it a bit. Also, a couple of the characters reactions to things felt a little unrealistic, but this wasn’t enough to turn me off, as any horror lover knows “realistic responses” aren’t #1 in any horror media.

Now onto the good stuff - the gore/horror in this book was AMAZINGLY well-written. As a seasoned horror fan, it’s increasingly difficult to find anything that scares me, but having read this book, I was a little more than spooked when I let my dog out around 1 am. It also kept me intrigued the whole time - while most of us can guess the plot of a family-moves-to-haunted-house story, it was still told very well and I was excited to watch it play out. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
