The Exorcist's House

Nick Roberts

3.92 AVERAGE

Every horror cliche you could ever dream of and I LOVED it. Insidious meets sinister meets omen and some good old fashioned exorcist.

Nora & Daniel buy a rural property that used to belong to an exorcist… you can just guess how this goes.

I do love Nick Robert’s and his writing style, such easy reads that describe some nasty stuff in such a gripping way. Love a good spooky paranormal thriller, the endings are always super frustrating too in the best way.

3.5⭐️ rounded up!

The book kicks off with instant haunted house action. Finally, no 100 page wait for spooky stuff. Unfortunately, that early momentum fizzles fast.

Daniel, the main character, is still bitter his wife got pregnant 16 years ago because it “ruined” his shot at a doctorate. His now again pregnant wife clearly had an affair, which becomes the most distracting subplot in a book about literal demons. Meanwhile, everyone’s checking their watch like hell runs on a schedule.

The story jumps between the haunted family and the construction crew that renovated the house (yes, really). One of them gouges his eyes out with a liquor bottle, so I guess the POV shift was for… that.

There are multiple corpses, hallucinations, a demon well in the basement, and yet the characters take ages to call a priest. When they do, he gets killed, of course. The real MVPs? Two dead characters who come back as ghosts to save the day, honestly the only part that gave me chills.

It ends with a possessed baby, a murdered? nursery worker, and a mom hallucinating her own corpse. Chaos

I feel like a hater but this just felt so over the top corny & predictable. There was not an appropriate amount of tension or build up so the "scary" parts did NOT hit and came off as cartoonish. Sometimes with horror less is more, and having a demon give some big evil speech is definitely too extra. A little confused by all the positive reviews but maybe it's a me problem but yet again I'm like, did we read the same book?

This book certainly grabbed my attention from the very beginning! I decided to read it at night, which made me jump a few times. It will definitely provide a deeper understanding of good and evil.
