Actually really good. This is the second main book in the series and picks up the story close after the first books ending. We are introduced to a completely new story line which also expands the world a lot. Some of the individual story arcs from the first book continues and builds up to possible future conflicts and possibly a redemption arc. The main group also splits up, which gives us opportunities to see different parts of the world and different dynamics between the main characters.
Cahill is a great writer who manages to capture the world in a magnificent way and create some incredible character development. A minus for me in this book is the large amount of unnamed characters who tags along and dies throughout the story, making them feel like fillers for the death count while our main characters survive every conflict. On the other hand, the story takes some turns and Cahill leads our characters into a very dark and brutal corner from which it feels impossible to escape. Cahill is also great with the magic and the battles and gives us some epic fights and moments, and even some really cool twists in the plot.

As much as I enjoyed this book—and I did enjoy it, considering I finished all 814 pages—it would’ve benefitted from some more edits.
Some parts felt quite repetitive, and as such, I got bored in the middle.
I loved the fight scenes though. They’re so descriptive and well-written.
Another reason why I had to shave off quite a lot of stars is because the POV changes so often that it gets confusing at times. And I like some characters more than others so I find myself wanting to skip.
Overall, still a pretty solid part of this series, but with a few tweaks, it could’ve been a 5/5.
