4.35 AVERAGE

Significant growth from writer. There are adjustments to the world-building from the first book that show he's taking ownership over his world and there are frequent plot reveals that are excellent.

Also really appreciate the inclusion of more women as POV characters. Looking forward to the next book.

Reviewing sequels without divulging spoilers can be quite challenging, but I’ll do my best to provide insights.
.
Firstly, let’s address the size of this book in comparison to the first installment—it’s nearly doubled. I had my doubts about whether it could live up to the original or suffer from second book syndrome, but boy, was I mistaken. Not only did it meet expectations, but it also surpassed them.
.
The story continues where it ended in the last book. In the North, alongside her faithful companion Faenir, Calen’s sister Ella embarks upon a journey to the port of Antiquar. Ella faces the unknown with unwavering determination, ready to overcome any obstacle in her path.
.
Meanwhile, within the hallowed halls of the Circle of Magii embassy in Al’Nasla, Rist Havel diligently refines his newfound mystical abilities, preparing himself for the daunting trials of Faith and Will.
.
Little does Rist know, his every move is being closely observed, assessed, and judged. His induction into the Circle was no mere coincidence; within him, a profound greatness lies, yet history has shown that even the mightiest can commit the gravest of deeds.
.
Behind the formidable walls of Belduar, Calen Bryer and his steadfast companions stand resolute, defending both their beloved city and its newly crowned king.
.
For over a millennium, Belduar has stood as an unyielding beacon of hope, never succumbing to any threat. However, the relentless Lorian empire once again encroaches upon its walls, and the ominous Dragonguard looms on the horizon.
.
As the forces of Lorian make their fateful landing on southern shores and Aeson Virandr’s letters of rebellion reach the hands of those who can effect change, it is only the discerning Knights of Achyron who truly comprehend the impending peril.
.
A relentless shadow stirs in the depths, an imminent danger that craves nothing but chaos, bloodshed, and fiery destruction. The stage is set for an epic battle of unimaginable proportions in the world of Belduar.
.
One aspect I’ve always cherished in epic fantasy is the multiple points of view that allow us to explore different corners of the world and truly connect with the characters. This element was executed flawlessly in this sequel.
.
Reading this book was an experience filled with constant anticipation and stress. I found myself torn between wanting it to conclude while simultaneously dreading the thought of it ending. It’s challenging to put those conflicting emotions into words.
.
To be completely honest, my perspective from the first book has undergone a complete transformation. I previously commented that this book didn’t bring anything new to the epic fantasy realm.
.
However, that’s not a necessity. I’ve come to realize that classic tropes, when skillfully written as Cahill does, can be just as enjoyable as innovative magic systems.
.
This sequel demonstrates that a well-executed tale with familiar elements can be a remarkable and captivating journey. I rated it 4.5/5 i really can’t wait to get back into the next book!

I have no words to describe how amazing this book was. From the first chapter up until the last it was fully action packed.

The world is expanded and we get new POV’s and new characters. My favorite characters go THROUGH IT on this one and it fucking hurt me.

The ENDING??

Wow what a book. About halfway through this book I was enjoying it, but then a single chapter added a whole star to my rating and it only kept up that impressive storytelling, characterisation and overall fun. I love so many of the characters, am deeply invested in the world and am so so excited for the next one.
