Cool plot, just not my cup of tea
dark emotional mysterious fast-paced

En scen gjorde mig illamående...

After reading The Lost Apothecary, I was a bit more underwhelmed by this one. It took me much longer to get into than I would’ve liked, but the storyline is so unique and Penner is a master at historical research.

Again, I am blown away by the storytelling of women absolutely outsmarting and kicking the asses of men in historical settings. And then this one is sapphic on top of it? Gimme gimme gimme.

This book does a wonderful job of juxtaposing the points of view between the one attempting to uncover the secrets and the one trying to keep them concealed.

The climax FELT like a climax and the stakes were so high I could literally feel myself getting more anxious with every minute that the characters counted down. Once I hit the last third of the book, I simply couldn’t put it down.

DNF’d, book was sooooo slow. I am normally a very fast reader, but this book I had a very hard time to get into. I felt like something in the flow was off. In the 100 pages or so that I did manage to read, the FMC didn’t seem to be anything special. I was not a fan of Lenna and how she handled her emotions, which she really doesn’t. I don’t understand why everyone recommends this book.

Also as an FYI for future readers this contains F/F relationship. I did not find anything about that going in and I like to be given a heads up when it’s going to be in the book I’m reading.

I felt this books uses of multiple POV was a little repetitive in the information it told, epically at the end climax, it definitely took away some of the tension about how it would go down and focused on when the information you already knew from the other POV would become relevant, not 100% my cup of tea. That being said the major plot twists itself were pretty solid and lead for good intrigues!

I enjoyed it! It’s a good summer read with a little bit of magic and whodunnitt.
