“Something cannot be an illusion if it still exists after we think it has gone.”
Lenna Wickes came to Paris in search of the truth of her sister’s death — she did not expect to become the student of the world’s premier medium. When Vaudeline D’Allaire is called to London to identify a killer, the two women find themselves embroiled in a mission far more dangerous than they could have imagined.
Sometimes you just need a murder mystery. Penner’s book was a fun, spooky read with just enough twists to keep me on my toes. The female characters were smart and quick, and I enjoyed seeing Lenna’s skepticism and Vaudeline’s belief butting heads. Also — surprise — it’s not a series (although I wouldn’t be mad if Penner wrote just one more).
Read this if you like the intersection of Victorian history and the supernatural, women being badasses, and are interested in something other than male-female romances.

It was a passable read but the mystery seemed to take it's time to unfold. It was slow in the beginning then sped up towards the end. I found myself skimming the paragraphs toward the end so I could move on to another book. I DID find the history of Victorian death rituals and beliefs, located at the end of the book, to be quite interesting

I am blown away, as a criminal genealogist I am well aware of the Victorian age and how many people were scammed by them, I have written several blog posts on them.
That being said this story was extraordinary! Your research to write this book must of been exhaustingly fun in itself. The story was fun and exciting as I couldn't put it down.
Thank you Hannah Penner for such a wonderful escape from this world to that.

Fun read! The mystery part of it was exciting and had me bouncing between suspects for a good while. I loved the theme throughout of solidarity among women in a men’s world, and how that solidarity is constantly underestimated by the men in this book.
