Book was interesting - would have liked more details about the seances and parlor tricks used during these late 1800 early 1900 societal get togethers. I could have done without the romance part of this book. I really liked her previous book The Lost Apothocary and had higher hopes for this book.

I have to say I don’t know how much I really listened & ‘took in’ the first half of the book. Then, when I picked up the book a few days later, it was the same thing. I did really enjoy her other 2 books.📚

The author did a fantastic job of capturing a spooky atmosphere: Victorian-era London, ghosts, dark alleys and darker secrets. Sure, there were a few clichés, but easy to overlook in the spirit of the novel.

The pacing of the book was great and a real page-turner, one of the highest compliments in my opinion.

The book suffered from the exposition. While I like clues gleaned from flashbacks, the amount of info relayed second-hand or through info dumps left the first half flat. A show-don’t-tell structure would have been more engaging.

3.7. I enjoyed this book and look forward to more publications by the author, Sarah Penner.

I read this for a book group. It was on my "to read" list before it was selected, but had it not been for the book group, I wouldn't have finished it. I did not like any of the characters, and I did not find the spiritualism to be believable. It took me forever to get through it (for me); in fact, I had returned it to the library at one point thinking I had finished it, and then I realized later that I hadn't. Never a good sign.
