the smurf stuff made me question everything

This book is not politically correct, that's true. But it's not meant to be. It's a fantasy. A fun, indulgent, enjoyable, well-written, steamy fantasy deeply entrenched in the enemies-to-lovers trope of the romance genre. If you're not looking to tickle that desire or satisfy that craving, you should not read this book. If you're looking for fights about politically incorrect or immature wording, then you can probably find it here, yes.

What I was looking for, and have been looking for, is a book about yearning. I wanted to read about a cold, aloof, unreachable man who falls head over heels for a "weird" (for her time/place/whatever), quirky woman but for whatever reason, he can't be with her or he can't tell her how he feels. Then he yearns for her, loves her feverishly, desperately, jealously, and protectively. Is it politically correct? Hell no! Do I want this to actually happen to me in real life? Hell no! That's why it's a F A N T A S Y.

This book scratched that itch for me in a way NO other book has, since I read Pride and Prejudice when I was 11. I LOVED this book, and I'm not ashamed of it. It was a delicious little romp, and I devoured it in one sitting.

I had borrowed it from the library. When I finished, I promptly bought my own copy and also bought the audiobook. Seriously. Because I knew I'd found a book that would be one of my lasting favorites for a long time. It not only hits every point of my own fantasies, but it's also well-written. I absolutely loved that the author did not go to lengths to spell out every single thing going on between the lines!! This is a huge problem with romance novels I've found. The authors very frequently offer you the psycho-analysis of what's going on, why characters are feeling the way they feel, and there's no depth to the reading experience.

Here, Lucy is feeling insecure and inadequate and she interprets all of Josh's moods and words and expressions to be negative. She can't possibly imagine that he feels anything toward her but hatred, and that's the lens through which she views all her interactions with him! I know this is a true experience because I have done this! People do this all the time! They see or hear what they want, and sometimes what they want is to feel insecure.

Meanwhile, we never really get a glimpse into what Josh is actually feeling. Instead of an omniscient narrator who can tell us exactly what Josh is imagining when Lucy tells him she's going on a date, we are left to guess why he's reacting the way he is. The way the author handles certain interactions where Josh's actions are misinterpreted by Lucy - these are the exact delicious things I was looking for, and the author delivered time and time again.

Maybe I'm so enthused because I've been looking for this exact book for so long without success, that I was actually SERIOUSLY on the verge of trying to write it myself. So so glad I don't have to attempt that now.

So yes, with apologies because there are definitely moments/words/phrases/scenarios that are not "okay" in today's era (i.e. elevator kiss non-consent issue, hello??), as far as feeding that primal brain and the desired lady/cold man fantasy.... it's basically perfect.
funny lighthearted relaxing medium-paced

this book is absolutely amazing. it is well written and the plot is so good. its a great romance book and highlights the enemies to lovers troupe really well.

The movie did this book so dirty.

What a cute romance. I liked the writing, the conversation, the characters, and the overall feeling while reading this book. It was quite predictable, but that’s okay. Books don’t need to throw me for a poop every time.
I will read more of her books if they’re as enjoyable as this one :)

so many complaints but it was sexy at least! what a fucking anticlimactic ending, it felt like the author was just going for a plot twist but it didn’t have enough shock value and left me annoyed

also nobody goes from executive assistant to COO, sally be serious please
funny informative lighthearted relaxing medium-paced

i watched the film and i wanted to read the book just to know the accuracy, and it wasnt that terrible. not a huge fan but i fee like it was summer-y enough to enjoy and it was very fast paced which is exactly what i needed

i kind of remember being announced as enemies to lovers??? i would say its more rivals to lovers than anything else...

This book was hilarious from start to finish

This is the B-E-S-T contemporary, enemies to lovers, rom-com(ever), I would recommend this to anyone who asked(or, most of the time, didn't)... apart from my parents and teachers as there is some spice(page 50, for anyone who wants to know what to "avoid" *cough cough*)
