This book was a total dark horse. I had read really mixed reviews about it and because I love Rooney's other work, I avoided reading it. But my GOD was this an incredible book, absolutely my favourite of the year so far.
Rooney has an unbelievable talent for creating a moving, shocking, breathtaking depth of character. These two men, alike and different, so complex—they are, above all else, real. This is a story about real people, unconventional and yet completely conventional situations and emotions. It's love, but it's also family, death, grief, meaning. It's philosophy, it's chess, it's sex. I can't even do it justice describing it.
Even to think about it is to live.

The lack of quotation marks when the characters speak gave me a headache. It was a bit of a struggle to finish .
