If you loved Bridgit Jones you are going to love Cat (Catriona) Buchanan.

Being a single mum and not having much luck in her love life, Cat decides to kill two birds with one stone. Her column in a Scottish paper isn't getting the readers it once did and after being ambushed into reading The Rules of Engagement by a work colleague, Cat decides to take on the challenges in the book to find herself a man and to also write about her experiences in her column to hopefully bump the figures up.

I Followed the Rules is such a light hearted and uplifting read. I loved the storyline and there is a great mixture of characters.

Grace, Cat's daughter is adorable and I love Cat's interfering sister Helen. Cat herself is a great character and comes across as being a lot of fun, would certainly love to have her come along on a girls night out.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out what is going to happen in the story and that's what I love about chick lit books, they are so easy reading so that you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the story for what it is.

As with any love life things never go to plan even if you are following instructions! Luckily being married myself I won't be attempting the rules in The Rules of Engagement any time soon.

Many thanks to Quercus Books and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book reads like Sophie Kinsella if she was drunk on sass ... and I loved loved loved it! The main character was so snarky and loveable and relatable.

My only gripe is that the ending was rushed, it would definitely have benefitted from being 100 or so pages longer.

I'll be moving the authors other books to the top of my to read pile!

This book had me reeled in from the minute I read the prologue. laugh out loud funny, one of the funniest books I've read this year.

I was after a light, fun read and this didn't disappoint! It's sassy and very funny. Sure, it's predictable, but Cat is so relatable and quirky, and I giggled to myself more than once while reading.

I loved this book and its just made choosing my 'book of the year' even harder.

I found myself staying up late to read chapters at a time; it's so funny that I found myself snorting with laughter....and waking the neighbour upstairs up in the process!

The only fault this book had was the fact it had to end! Joanna Bolouri is fast becoming one of my favourites!

A romantic comedy is never complete without the leading man and once again, I just had a dream of this hero in I Followed the Rules after I’ve read the book. With a clever wit and undeniably charming personality, readers will definitely swoon for this fictional heartthrob who just oozes sex appeal. As much as I like to fanboy over that hunk, I’d let you read it to find out more about him (and his duck shower cap).

Loved the sorting of Bolouri in her other two books “The List” and “Relight My Fire” so was eager to complete my collection and pick this book up. It was enjoyable enough, the main character was relatable and likeable. However I felt something lacking from her other books, all in all a fun enough read but don’t think I’d pick it up again. As always look forward to whatever Bolouri works on next!

Every now and again I need a book like this to help me see the funny side of life again and to escape reality for a bit and that's exactly what this book does.

I Followed the Rules is literally a joy to read. It is fun, humourous and has one of the best female characters in fiction called Catriona or as her friends call her, Cat. Cat is a kick-arse lady who certainly doesn't hold back when it comes to telling it like it is and expressing who she is. She is one of the most memorable characters and can easily recall all the things she loves and does like her swearing, singing and of course country music. She also has one of the best eight year daughters, who had me grinning every single time she said something. I think she is more clued up than the rest of us adults! They are also of course joined by a host of fantastic characters who are very fun and witty- I have decided I need more people like this in my life.

Joanna's writing style is great, she makes it so easy to read and you get sucked into the storyline so quickly. Not once did this make for hard reading. It's lighthearted and you very quickly find yourself in amongst Glasgow and Cat's story.

Although the plot of this book had a similar feel to another book I have read recently, it still managed to be unique in its own way and had a very welcome little twist at the end.

As much as I didn't want this book to end, it's one that I just had to keep on picking up and reading, it is the ultimate feel good book and gave me the escape from the real world that I needed. I am very keen to read Joanna's debut The List now.
