All of the 80’s references are completely lost on me, but the quest flow sprinkled with action makes for a compelling book. I wish the main character Wade/Parzival had slightly more setbacks throughout (except for 1 life changing event, it seems everything just goes his way) especially given that the non-metaverse outside world is completely in shambles.

I'm mixed. (And I really wish this was 3.5 stars) The first 1/3 was quite boring. A massive brain vomit of 80s nostalgia that did very little to move the story forward or give a great deal of pertinent info.
After that it was much better. However, much of the appeal falls in knowing the 80s (music, TV, fashion, products, etc) AND at least a minimum of an understanding of gaming and decades of its evolution.
The second 2/3 was definitely more engaging and better paced. While there was slight teen/20s romance ~ there was no love triangle, which I greatly appreciated. It wasn't a horribly long book ~ so I wouldn't completely count it out, just know it takes a while to get any traction.

Really a 3.5 star rating. Honestly can't wait now to watch the movie.
This wasn't a terrible book by any means. I enjoyed the story, characters, and theme of RPO. I'll more than likely read the second book, but I'm in no rush to do so.
My only dislike about it was the pacing. It felt slow and I understand we have to have the world built for us yet it felt at times there was pieces of information being repeated which took me out of the story. Once you're out of the story it's hard to get back in. The first 80 pages I would say I forced myself to get through simply because I wanted to know how Wade would overcome a lot of the issues. I'll even say there were times I skimmed through it rather than read each word because it was either going over what was already given or I guessed it would happen.
However the plot was one to keep reading for. The search for the egg, the Sixers, and the risk of life is what kept me reading. The small dose of romance was an added bonus but even without it I believe this book would have gotten the same rating from me.
My favorite turnout was Aech, which I won't spoil. It speaks about a lot in this current world even as this whole thing does with the way our current America is going. I would probably suggest this book to gamer friends.

I enjoyed this book, but it definetely did not live up to the hype. I've heard many times that this novel was a masterpiece, amazing, groundbreaking, phenomenal. I just can't agree.
I was born in the late 90s and grew up in the 2000s, so these are the decades that I know the most about. I was never really interested in the 80s, besides listening to some of the music, I do not know a lot about it. And honestly, I never felt the need to. Even while reading this book I did not have any interest in the cultural aspect of it. I think that not even my parents, who grew up in the 80s would be interested in the special edition of dungeons and dragons or in a game, that was so underground that it could only be played on one specific type of computer.
I'm also NOT a fan of video games, the closest I ever got was playing the Sims fanatically when I was 12 (lol). So I never played any of these games, didn't understand anything they were talking about most of the time. I'm just not a gamer, I never will be and I do not want to be.
These two factors made it hard for me to get really into the book. It was like reading a fantasy novel, with many intricate and little details/trivia that I did not know about or understand, except it was a real life decade 40 years ago.
Most of the times when I'm reading a book that contains clues and riddles, I like to try to solve it along with the characters, to understand it. But in this case, I did not have any knowledge to do so, and even after I was presented with the answer it didn't "click" since I don't know any of these weird 80s Capt'n Crunch or Halliday facts. I wonder if people who grew up in the 80s would solve them on their own, since the possibilitie are literally endless. That made me feel like I couldn't completely dive into the story, I was always a spectator watching from the sidelines, waiting for the main character to figure things out and present them to me.
Overall it was a fun experience, and it reminded me a lot of Percy Jackson, but for grown ups.
P.s.: Am I really supposed to believe that these characters actually knew the entire script to not only one, but two movies, by heart? Nuh huh

La historia empieza muy bien, pero poco a poco decae, principalmente por las soluciones tan simplistas y rebuscadas con las que el protagonista soluciona todo. Muy infantil (pese a los desesperados intentos del autor por no caer en esto tocando temas como sexo y masturbación). Muchos cliches. Y en especial... Las pruebas mas absurdas para obtener el tan codiciado "Huevo de Pascua". Solo engancha por momentos.

Read this a few years ago and loved it. Decided to revisit it since I want to read “Ready Player Two”.
Glad I did cause I had some details from the movie etched in my memory.
