I really enjoyed the first book in the series so I was really excited to pick this one up and get into it.

Sadly it took awhile for things to get going, and then when it finally did there were some things that I just didn't enjoy. I didn't like the lack of communication and secretes in the story, I didn't really feel the passion and connection most of the time (at some points I did, I liked them together early on) and there were just several things that didn't fully make sense to me.

A key part of the story didn't have a strong enough connection in the beginning. It was brought up after the fact to try and explain things away but at that point it didn't really feel genuine.

That being said, when the characters did talk to each other I REALLY enjoyed that writing. And In general I liked the book but I just didn't love it.

I will read more from the series though. I still enjoy the writing and the over all concept behind these stories even if this one wasn't my favorite.

Another good mystery, historical fiction, and romance blend. It picks up smoothly after A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby. I would highly recommend reading these books in order.

Reviewed from a library copy.

This book was read thanks to NetGalley.

I read this and first I was like is this like Bridgenton... but this have something that to me makes it better,

they do actually talked and addresses racism, which in my eyes is a plus considering how important is to write historical fiction tackling social issues that not so ironically started in this time.

Fan of bridgenton this is for you.

Sweet Regency romance! After surviving a shipwreck, Jemina has no memory of her past. But she suspects barrister Daniel is keeping information from her. Can the two trust each other long enough to discover the truth about her identity?

This fresh, original novel has a brilliantly complex plot. It's as much historical fiction as romance. It deals head-on with issues of race and patriarchy, but they never dominate the story. This is about two smart, courageous, determined people taking control of their destiny and protecting those they love.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Gave me major Bridgerton vibes, but I didn’t fall for the characters as much as I’d hope. Daniel and Jemina were likeable and there were some awkward funny moments but I felt it was a bit too slow burn for my liking. This might just be regency style though.

This was so adorable. After reading A Duke, the Lady and a Baby, I really wanted to learn more about Jemina, so I was happy that she was the heroine of this book. Jemina and Daniel's love story was so original and refreshing. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Vanessa would surprise me in delightful ways. Not only does she craft well-written love stories she also imbeds history into them as well. The historical details adds another rich layer to the story, which I really enjoyed.

Now we need a book about Lord Gantry and his wife!

I highly recommend this book! Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first time reading a novel from Vanessa Riley and dove right in to book two in the Rogues and Remarkable Women series and even though this was billed as a stand-alone I spent a good deal of the book confused because a number of characters, references, or situations were not well explained. I really wanted to enjoy this story especially since there are not a large number of historical romances novels that feature a hero (or heroine) that is not white but I had a hard time connecting with both Daniel and Jemina. I think I would have been more engrossed in their love story if I really understood them better, or the situation they found themselves in.
