So, you know, is Benedict toxic? Probably. Yes, definitely. Did I still enjoy this? Yes, yes I did.

The Cinderella retelling aspect was fun, and just like all the Bridgerton novels, Quinn makes me laugh out loud and charms me.

This one was slower going, but I think it’s the fault of my general reading slump. They’re not groundbreaking stories by any means, but they’ve been a nice little escape.

If you are not used to early 2000s historical romances, or if you’re expecting the show, I recommend you adjust your thoughts going in.

This was the best thing for me to have picked to start to get me out of this reading slump. So easy to engage with a world I’m already familiar with and one that’s currently in the conversation. Also, the added element that this is essentially a Cinderella story makes it so digestible.

The central characters weren’t one note, even though Araminta did feel a bit pantomime at the end. The plot isn’t anything new but I think the Bridgerton world and regency setting add an interesting dynamic within the story.

I did have some problems with the period esque behaviour and attitudes from our protagonist which was annoying and a bit of a let down. He’s not as unproblematic as I would like but with these kind of stories I think they’re either plot devices or you have to push past them.

Mostly this is a quick and casual read, it’s good at what it’s trying to do and I was pleased.
