Heartbreaking, terrifying, and ultimately hopeful. Fantastic audiobook.
This was the first book that I read in 2022 that I truly loved. Jason is an amazing writer, and his story is moving. It's refreshing for someone to be so candid about their mental health, and how they got help. Though he's been a politician this is not a political book.
Learned so much! I think a lot of people would be wise to read this account of what it’s like to be in the military and deal with PTSD. Appreciate Jason Kander’s words and experiences. 5 stars. Audiobook.
What a great audiobook! I've been a big fan of Kander since he burst onto the scene. This book about his struggle with PTSD is such an important read. I've been a follower of his on social media before and after he shared more about his struggle and took a break from politics and the spotlight. It's a reminder that you never know what's going on in someone's life. I LOVED that Diana's perspective and experience is told throughout the book. She is a survivor of trauma as well! This book provides a great perspective of what its like to be a soldier these days and also what its like to struggle with mental health.

I am so glad I read this book and I will be recommending it to many friends. There are so many moments of learning and inspiration and all of it is quite honestly and plainly told, so as to be able to relate to what Jason and Diana were going through. I learned that PTSD itself is different for everyone, definitely can be hard to recognize and is a large gray area the author calls, accurately, The Monster. I work alongside many survivors of gun violence and I see this quite often: not ready, or possibly willing, to accept that PTSD is very real and could be addressed with therapy. So, Jason Kander, thank you for writing this book which undoubtedly will help so many people. I look forward to reading about the Afghan Rescue Project, when you're ready to tell that story!
As a veteran married to a veteran, this book was relatable in a number of ways. It took bravery and humility to write, and I’m thankful for it.
