Loved this book, not all of it is as interesting but it written in a lovely poetic way and shows insights in daily American life (which seems exotic as a European) that keep the less exciting parts entertaining. I loved the comparisons she makes between being an artist and athlete. Especially her conclusion towards the end that being special requires doing a lot of un-special things really hit a chord. I enjoyed this book as an illustrator myself and think that if you have an interest in competitive sports it's a great book to read. If arts and sports are foreign to you this book might be a little too out there though.

I LOVED Swimming Studies. As a swimmer myself, I could relate to it in a personal way and I really enjoyed Leanne Shapton's art and her poetic writing. My full review is here: http://booksbikesfood.com/2015/03/07/leanne-shapton-swimming-studies-2012/

not exactly what I had imagined, but enjoyed the play on “studies”— exploring the methods of training, her visual artwork sprinkled throughout the book and how everything in her world continues to be rooted in her history of swimming. particularly appreciated the story behind all her swimsuits and of course, her moving paintings.

The author writes about a passion for swimming and shares her various experiences with it throughout her life from competitive swimming, swimming for pleasure to painting and writing about water. This book is inspiring as it shows us that we should never give up on the things that make us happy, just find new ways to incorporate them in to our lives. The paintings throughout the book make you want to dive into the page.

Shapton's writing is the inside of my lungs. Nostalgia and longing and boredom that I forgot was forced back up, painfully.

Recommended to any former competitive athlete (not just swimmers, but as a former swimmer, I completely identified with so much here). This was so dreamy and beautiful and moving. Loved.

I really enjoyed this book. It brought back memories of being on my high school swim team (I lacked any real talent). I liked how much she tied things to smell especially because the book is rooted in memory. Not a SPORT book but more about her relationship to swimming and reconciling her progress in the competitive swimming world. Closer to 4.5 ⭐️
