April 2025 Bookclub Read ——

That dragged on for way too long.
Was it extremely well written? Absolutely. Did it have some insightful things to say? Sure. Was it an interesting perspective? Definitely. Was it also extremely boing? Yes. If this was a 200 page book it would have been a 5 stars. But the fact that it just dragged on made the experience of reading a chore.
Even though it was so long, there were still confusing time jumps between random paragraphs. The chapters didn't seem to mean anything. We would go from the 14 year old protagonist to the 18 year old protagonist in the span of one line, but the next three chapters would all be about the same moment. It made for a confusing read. I think this book is definitely for the rich and wealthy, it's very posh, very uppidy and most of the jokes go over the head of us 'common folk'. I also think there are so many better books that cover the coming of age gay man in the 1960s trope A LOT better than this one does. I did enjoy the setting though, very salt burn vibes.

Quotes I liked:
-'If you have the gift, she said, you can do anything. But it will be difficult for you. She gave me the pondering stare of someone needing to be frank as well as supportive. Not because of your talent, but because of the way people see you.'
-'I didn't want anyone to know that my smug-looking silence on the subject was ignorance, or that I cared enough to put it right.'
-'It was only as the story settled and took shape that my own anger came, a kind of delayed revelation. And part of the revelation was that it had taken so long to come. All my life I'd been ambushed, and slow, every time, to stand up for myself.'

our evenings does so many things and does them all well. i really enjoyed reading it and thinking about it, it has something, some je ne sais quoi, that i long for but don’t often find in modern literature.
