enjoyed the first third the least and was ready to give up at that point BUT i persevered and after David left Bampton (around page 180 i think) i could not put the book down and binged the remaining 300 pages in 2 evenings…. the gorgeous writing is what made me stay and keep reading and im very glad i did cause this turned out to be such an extraordinary account of David’s life that im likely not going to be able to stop thinking about for the next several months… alas the ending left me cold and also at the same time wanting MORE thus the four star rating. i need to read more of Hollinghurst asap
