Very beautifully written and richly layered novel. This truly solidifies for me my strong preference for character-driven novels compared to plot driven novels. Some scenes were so clear to me that they were like watching a movie in my mind. Highly recommend!

This book is fine. It's not badly written in the slightest. I just didn't find it particularly interesting. It felt like a long list of "and then this happened, and then this happened". I never really felt like I got under the skin of the characters.

I wanted to like it more - I love long character studies, esp. queer ones. But even though the writing was great, there were too many British references for me to follow (not a critique of the book since obviously its British, but it impacted my enjoyment) and the Giles character felt so flat and underdeveloped for carrying this weirdly huge weight for the entire book. I loved the refrain of the title though, really smoothly done.
