Having just finished it, I'd rank AH's seventh novel as my third favourite of his, the list now being:
1) The Line of Beauty
2) The Swimming-Pool Library
3) Our Evenings
4) The Spell
5) The Sparsholt Affair
6) The Stranger's Child
7) The Folding Star
While his first four novels are confined to time periods of a few months or years, Our Evenings carries on AH's 'saga' phase, where the books cover whole decades and lifetimes. I prefer the tighter pace of the earlier style, but the beauty and wit of AH's prose still makes Our Evenings an absolute treat.
