I didn’t quite get where this book was going but in the end I quite liked the story. It was expansive and actually the somewhat banal descriptions of everyday English life were kind of interesting for me maybe because I used to live there. I do feel it dragged a bit in the middle though. Well written.

P.S I wanted more smut !

The ending completely flawed me and bumped this review up from a 3.5 to a 4 overall. I wasn’t a big fan of the pacing of the book and was struggling a tad with the time jumps, but the ending meant it all made sense. I love reading character driven books and this was excellent. David’s mum and Esme were just remarkable.

A beautifully written near-poetic journey through the most important memories of a Burmese actor from teenager to old age that weaves together into a gorgeous and textured tapestry of queerness, art and life. When the end comes around it hits you like a ton of bricks as Hollingsworth reveals what he was trying to say all along. Quite stunning.
