i didn't absolutely love every segment of this book, but the totality is a masterpiece. an acclaimed British actor, a man of color, now a elderly man, recalls his life and loves. the writing is superb.

My first Hollinghurst. Beautiful writing and gorgeous narration of the audiobook by Prasanna Puwanarajah (it’s a shame he doesn’t seem to have narrated much besides this). It’s just the sort of literary fiction I like, the alienated gay sensibility that I find myself drawn to again and again. The ending was such a gut punch, so quick and brutal and without resolution that I’m not sure how to deal with it. It felt like there were certain themes and threads that were never tied up but I suppose that’s life, and this was an account of a life.
