I loved this so much. Comedians genuinely write some of the best mystery books. If you enjoyed this, you may also enjoy Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series.

A word of warning: This book is absolutely not for anyone who hates spoilers. It is full of 4th wall breaks from our protagonist- Ernest Cunningham- in a way that often made me laugh out loud. Prior to the start of the story proper, we’re treated to a list of rules for murder mysteries and a convenient list of page numbers where deaths occur. These are referenced throughout, not to mention there are several interjections from Ernest to assure readers that everything is above board. It all felt clever and fun without dipping into condescension.

The only thing that tempted me to take away any smidge of the rating, it would be an offhand remark about someone saying ma’am in a kind of American accent and it coming out like “marm”. I still don’t get it. (But of course, I’m not actually deducting anything because I had too much fun reading this.)

The title is slightly misleading, but so is most of the book. I’ve never read a book where I felt so lied to while only reading the truth. It’s a hilarious dark comedy mystery.

I liked the writing style at first but then it got a bit tedious and I was bored in parts of the book….almost a DNF but I kept going as wanted to find out what happened but was disappointed in the ending…..I think this book is a marmite book….. not for everyone……

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone follows Ernest "Ernie" Cunningham as he attends his unconventional family reunion. Ernie is a reliable narrator explaining his family dynamic a piece at a time by revealing information about each family member. Because of this, the plot felt twisty in the best way.

The character development was very strong. I cared for Ernie, he made me laugh, I knew his internal monologue, and I empathized with his emotional and moral struggles. The author helped me understand the motives of characters that I had originally disliked. No character was one-dimensional, and I really appreciated the effort it took to create a story I was invested in.

I felt like I actually had a chance at solving the mystery and was able to figure out one key clue which felt exciting. Still, the ending left me shocked! By no means was this book predictable!

My one and only criticism happened in the epilogue. One final detail lacked clarity. I ended up Googling to see if others felt the same and found some discussion that helped clarify my confusion.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I wish I could experience it for the first time again - it's an absolute gem that left me spellbound and eager to share with everyone!
