You'd never believe it was the same author. A bit like Anita Blake but much softer although just as deadly.

This was certainly different than her other books that I've read (Valdemar fantasy), mainly because it very much felt like a product of when it was written (late 80s). Some of the slang is oddly out of place. For example, the two main characters keep saying "ack emma" instead of A.M. when talking about time in the morning. I had to look that up, and apparently that is how British soldiers in WWI told time. It was out of vogue by WWII, so I'm not sure why a 1980s cop would be saying that.

One of the best features of Mercedes Lackey stories is that I always look forward to getting attached to her main character so that I really feel like I'm on their team when the big peril comes along. However, I never really grew attached to either Diana Tregarde or Mark Whatsisname in this book, and the peril didn't seem all that dangerous, at least for them.

I'm sure I'll read another one in the series simply because I enjoy her other work so much, but this one felt a bit flat.

I almost feel as though in the hands of another writer, this concept would have been much more interesting... as it stands, though, I doubt I'll read any of the other novels.

I would have liked this better if it was all from the witch's POV, I think (I forgot her name though). But I don't agree with the "believe what makes you happy" ideas on religion, and I dislike some of the portrayals of Christianity.
