I don't generally go toward nonfiction books but this one read like a novel. Although it centers around a serious medical condition, it's also just a story about this family. Highly recommend!

I read this for Psychology and it was very interesting book - with many studies and theories named.

The acts of rape/sexual assault to a child sibling were described, but not in too much detail, and in only a couple chapters. Everything is in 3rd person. The death of parent is described and talked about (like going to the funeral), but the death itself wasn’t described very in-detail and it was a natural death. There was also religious delusions (believing self to be God, and believing God was sending them a message). The school shootings was mentioned once, and a specific event wasn’t discussed.

This was really interesting, though I often had trouble keeping track of the brothers because there was so many of them. I believe I've seen Margaret Galvin Johnson's art before, which I wasn't expecting when I started reading the book. Some of the research being done seems to be almost a positive spin on previous methods that had been used by the eugenics movement. This is very interesting take on reflecting on both the impact of mental illness and its treatments, and the human side of living through and coming out on the other side of trauma.
