Back when she first hit it big with Good in Bed, I read a bunch of Jennifer Weiner's novels. Her books were fun, light, and relatable without being too saccharine or cheesy. Then I read Mrs. Everything earlier this year and it was a different Jennifer Weiner than I remember. I loved Mrs. Everything it was an enjoyable historical fiction ode to sisters.

Big Summer: so, when I saw this cover and hadn't yet read the blurb, I figured: chick lit beach read. OR maybe historical fiction chick lit beach read. Well, it started out like chick lit and then there was a twist and it took on another dimension.

The book's main character is Daphne, a young woman living in NYC with rising success as a body-acceptance Instagrammer. Daphne's rise to "internet fame" was kicked off by a viral video of her telling off a man in a night spot. That same night was also the end of her friendship with her school friend Drue. Drue was a wealthy girl who frequently mistreated her friends. 6 years after their friendship ended, Drue seeks out Daphne to ask her to be her maid-of-honor in her upcoming Cape Cod wedding.

I would still consider it a beach read though. :) I actually enjoyed the added dimension of the twist. AND I loved the Cape Cod setting. This book is a look at female friendship and the issues with being an instagram influencer. It was a fun read that you don't have too take too seriously.

I would agree with others’ review that the first half of the book does not seem to match the second half. I was giving the book a solid 5 stars until I reached the half point. Then, I got disappointed in where the story was heading, how the characters were behaving and how the writing didn’t seem as thought out as before. I wish this hadn’t veered course in the middle of the story.

This book was simply not for me. I simply did not like it. Honestly, it is me, not the book.

If you are a fan of Jennifer Weiner, you probably stopped reading this half ass review.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Atria for this advanced readers copy. This book released in May 2020.

3 stars for the storyline for the first 2/3 or the book, enough to keep me hooked on reading for the whodunit when I didn't enjoy the writing itself (2 stars for the writing which felt cliche, full of stereotypes and soap opera tropes) and 1 star for the last third. Ugh.

This book caught my eye because it was advertised as a great beach read and involved lost friendships. Also, I enjoyed Mrs. Everything. After a 3 month hold at the library, I finally received the audible version. I thought this book had a very fun tone to it as it describes Daphne as being a plus size Instagram influencer with a positive self image “online.” She is described by an associate as being authentic and unapologetically yourself. I was hooked.
She is then approached by an ex-best friend from high school named Drue, a very rich socialite who basically begs Daphne back in her life by asking her to be in her wedding. After some reservations, she accepts and that’s where the mystery starts. Drue, the Princess was not very nice to Daphne or to anybody else for that matter.
This story takes us to a world of social media, rich bitch daddy issues, a murder, a love story and self discovery. It was definitely entertaining, witty and empowering.
