I decided to read Aftermath after reading an excerpt in the scifi collection "Octavia's Brood" not knowing what to expect from this Star Trek actor and Reading Rainbow host. This book is not the best writing and is full of cliches and plot holes. But, at the same time it brings a diverse set of likeable characters, an atypical post apocalypse story, lots of good ideas, and lots of nods to radical movements and struggles faced by more than the usual white male protagonists in sci fi. I couldn't decide whether to give it 3 or 4 stars. It was reading rainbow, not writing rainbow, for a reason. But I'm glad Burton wrote this book anyways.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I'm a fan of Mr. Burton's acting and love Reading Rainbow. Unfortunately, as is the case with far too many celebrity authors' work, this book needed harsher editing. The basic concept is not too improbable, and the message is a good one. The heavy-handed delivery and excess of adjectives overwhelmed both plot (thin) and message though.

Many of the reviews here call out this book’s vulnerabilities and weaknesses, and I think those criticisms are fair. However, I think it would be unfair to ignore that this book tells a story with a wonderfully powerful vision that is even more prescient today than the day it was published in 1997. Simply, I think there’s a lot of value here that the star rating isn’t indicating, and I think if you’re willing to forgive some plot holes, MacGuffins, and purple prose, you’ll find a worthwhile book that excels on Burton’s sheer natural storytelling prowess.

I liked the plot. It was engaging and thought provoking. I wish it would have been a little more developed. There were quite a few times where a one or two line explanation of past events that explain the storyline. It would have been nice to have those pivotal moments fleshed out more.

I could not continue reading the book when an incident of CSA happened very early on.
