This book perfectly illustrates the importance of dialog over leaps to action. It also manages to be pro-America while also honestly acknowledging and challenging the things that we could do better.

i appreciated this insight into a little-explored aspect of crisis management. noesner's effort to give negotiation its due was well done and overall a welcome addition to my shelf, though it did drag in parts.

I learned about this book when I saw that the Waco series on Netflix was based on parts from it. The book is so interesting!

Though not particularly humble, Gary Noesner writes about his time as an FBI negotiator. As someone who could see myself in a job like that, I found this book particularly interesting and informative. He talks about the various strategies that are negotiator users to release hostages and/or bring a crisis to an end. He uses various situations including the siege on Waco to prove his points. I thought the story was well written and the perfect length. I listened to this on Audible and Gary Noesner himself reads the book. I like it when authors do that, even when they really don’t have the voice for it. It helps you understand a bit better the person behind the story. All in all I thought this was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning a bit more about the FBI, negotiators in general or just siege situations.

Compelling and interesting. Noesner has some great stories to tell.

The Pluses: Personal recollection of various hostage situations, some insight into negotiation techniques.

The Minuses: Tone gets dry and sections get plodding on occasion, avoids openly criticizing some parties that deserve it.

The Bottom Line: A reasonably interesting read with an uncommon vantage in true crime.

I think there is some irony in the man on the cover pointing a gun at me when the book advocates a non-tactical approach to dealing with criminals!
