I wanted to really love this book, toted as a thriller and mystery. I was expecting so much more. Once you figure out that Mark is the one who dies, the “twist” of his death is almost irrelevant. Also for all the talk about the consequences and how they’re supposed to affect the players, it seems like they gloss over them all pretty quickly. Okay read and moves along well, but not an edge of your seat story.

One of the best, most suspenseful books I've ever read. It's genius.

Liked would be the wrong word because it was so anxiety-producing, but it was gripping from start to finish. Would have been five stars if something in the end hadn't bothered me. It's a small thing though compared to the overall strength of the book. Definitely worth reading.

i just have to ask...what was the fucking point?

It reminded me of The Secret History by Donna Tartt, but I liked this one better!

Great, finished it in a week, worth reading.

Not everything I wanted it to be, but enjoyable enough.

Intriguing premise that for me went sideways at the end. The game yada yada 6 friends play only 5 survive yada yada.... at times engrossing and annoying but i truly did not care about any of the players and by the end really did not care who won...or why.

I'd give it 3.5, really, but I always round up. I enjoyed the story, but not enough to read it quickly. Good story, fairly well told, could have been better. Hope everyone enjoys my vague review.

This novel is in a similar vein as Donna Tartt's The Secret History. Black Chalk centers around a group of six students at University who play a game of chance with consequences designed by the group for each player if they don't play well. I had a hard time getting into the book as it was hard to figure out who was narrating the story and the game itself is never really explained. Mostly it felt like reading about a group of college kids doing a lot of drinking while sitting around their dorm rooms and then messing with each others heads as they thought up the consequences for losing players of the game. I never really connected with any of the characters which made it hard to care about the game and its consequences.
