An excellent epic fantasy debut. Lots of combat, some intrigue, even some light-handed magic.
Slight gripe: chapter balance between the three POV characters felt a little uneven. Subjectively, it felt like Adare had about a quarter of the book or less. Valyn and Kaden dominate the show, which overall is alright with me as their passages were much more interesting to me.
My biggest gripe is that I got extremely tired of one specific in-world curse: 'Kent-kissing. 'Kent-kissing this, 'Kent-kissing that, it probably appears multiple times per page in various places. I have few problems with cursing, often or not, and even fewer problems with lore-friendly cursing, but this one just got really old for some reason.
I had a lot longer review written up but Chrome at it, so this all I've got for now.

Spoiler
The imbalance gets even worse when I consider how both Valyn and Kaden come into some bad-ass powers near the very end of the novel, while Adare is just sharp, politically powerful and highly motivated, but otherwise a perfectly normal woman. I had been suspicious of the regent all along, but that betrayal was a lot later in the book than I would have guessed. My biggest gripe is that I got extremely tired of one specific in-world curse: 'Kent-kissing. A book that's hard to explain in the same manner as I can't understand why it took me so long to finish reading it. A compelling story that I'm glad to have gone through yet I don't yearn to pick up the next installment.
I wish I was ever as hard edged and confident as characters always are in these books. Even they doubt has certainty that my moments of clarity decidedly lack.
Do I think you should read it? Yes.
Does this counts as a review? No.
Will I try to do better next time? Perhaps.

Enjoyable fantasy trilogy kickoff. 3.5 stars if I could. The emperor is killed and his three children are left to pick up the pieces - starting with figuring out that he even died. An ancient race that almost exterminated mankind - but they are all gone? Gritty, dark and all that. I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I did have some trouble following which brother was which at times - even when they were talking with each other - which makes me wonder if I'm that brain dead as a reader or if there is something subtly confusing with the dialogue. Either way, it wasn't a frequent or huge distraction and I was totally pulled into the story regardless.
Really mixed feelings on this one. The world the author created was very unique and interesting, but the character development was lacking. I just don't care enough about the characters to continue in with the saga.
