This was such a cute and charming story. It reminded me a lot of the first time I read the Hobbit, they both have cozy, relaxed bedtime story vibes. There were times where I was bored and I had to force myself to reengage with the story, but on the whole I really enjoyed my time in this world. I can easily picture myself reading this to my kids someday after tucking them into bed, which is some of the highest praise you can give to a YA cozy fantasy novel 💛

"Read it again as an adult", my aunt said to me. So it was the next new book I picked up. I made the right choice, and was able to see more than "just" another adventure story. Yes, the main character is a man, but the heroes are people of color and that is important. My copy has an Afterward by Le Guin, in which she calls out this active choice to buck tradition, and the difficulty she faced getting the cover of the book to depict Ged as he is written. Representation matters.
