I had no idea what this book was when I picked it up at a .99 cent store, just that I knew the name.
When my father was in an accident and in the hospital under a coma for a couple of months, my brother suggested I read to him. I picked this book completely at random, but while reading it out loud, there was a really strange feeling, because it seemed to resonate so well with him...and I'll never forget this book because of that connection, it fit him really well.

In the beginning, I was off-put by the simple, caveman-like style. But, as the title character came to life, I was really into it. My favorite piece of symbolism was how the boat stayed strong except for the tiller, projecting the state of the old man as he persevered, but his hands were destroyed, causing the young boy cry when he saw them.
Some favorite quotes: “But, thank God, they are not as intelligent as we who kill them; although, they are more noble and more able.”
“The shark let go of the fish and slid down, swallowing what he had taken as he died.” (The sharks being Hemingway’s critics.)
Entertaining short read.

A story about an old man who goes fishing.
I went into this blind, but I was suprised at how good it was! The writing was really good, and I've never cared this much about fishing before. I loved the old man and his ramblings. It was a simple, short story, without much going on. But I think that its charm.
4/5
