I can see why people would hate this but I love reading about unlikeable and perhaps terrible people taking bad decisions. I also love a good marriage plot. And multiple points of view. And music, particularly someone being obsessed with piano. I love reading about the very thin lines that separate romantic relationships from friendship. I love... well, I loved almost everything about this book and I think Naoise Dolan is a terrific writer. She's definitely not a Sally Rooney copycat and it would be nice if people stopped saying that about every female Irish author.

Now here we go! I read Exciting Times and while I did like it I felt it was missing something. The Happy Couple delivers fully.

While I did have my own small issues with this read, overall I cannot dismiss my captivating experience with this novel. This is my first time reading Dolan’s work and although I have heard the comparisons between her and Rooney, I believe her style of language is different in a lot of ways. There were often shocking passages that forced me to reread them again and again and to me that is something that allows for such an interesting read; something that makes you asks questions and think further upon an aspect or topic even as you progress, it stays there growing in your mind. By the last few chapters, I will admit, I was not entirely tethered to the ending but the complexities between each character and their dialogues provided a contemporary examination of something quite intriguing; hidden thoughts and flaws that boil to the surface and shine through for all to see. It’s not always pretty, but it is certainly hard to look away.
